INNOVATION > WIRELESS SURVEILLANCEComparing TVI to Conventional Video CodecsThe TVI codec from Digital Barriers is a ground-breaking technology solution that enables fixed frame encoding and transmission of surveillance content over very low bandwidth networks, including 3G, GPRS, tactical IP radios, satellite and the internet. Unlike conventional video codecs and wireless approaches, such as H.264 and standard 3G streaming solutions, the TVI codec was designed from the outset to address the technical challenges of both video encoding and wireless transmission. It provides a more consistent image quality with greater levels of detail in the image – even at low bandwidths. In practice, this means more effective wireless surveillance from remote locations and in situations with variable network bandwidth, with reduced latency, as well as more effective control over remote pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) camera equipment. This is best demonstrated visually… What you can see in the below examples is a comparison of the TVI codec running against a conventional H.264 codec – over a 3G equivalent wireless connection achieving 64kbps bandwidth. Each scenario demonstrates a particular aspect of the TVI advantage. SCENARIO 1: Buffering and latency
Conventional video encoders create variable frame sizes over time that often require more transmission bandwidth than is available. This can result in dropped or delayed ‘packets’ of video data and a cumulative build up of latency in the viewed video. In a critical operational situation, this can lead to delays between live events and receipt of surveillance content. SCENARIO 2: Movement and artefacts
Wireless video transmission is often associated with blocky, distorted images – particularly where there is a high degree of movement and scene change. Unlike conventional video encoders, TVI does not rely on macroblocks and motion vectors (read our technical paper for an explanation) and therefore provides a more consistent and usable image.
