INNOVATION > COMPLEX SURVEILLANCE

Surveillance Systems Built on Intelligent Networks and Sensors

Complex surveillance systems can typically involve extensive transmission networks and often hundreds or even thousands of sensors. Maintaining this infrastructure and securing it against tampering or deliberate sabotage can be a major challenge. The result of network and sensor failures can involve complex and costly repairs as well as compromised security.

Fibre remains the high-capacity network of choice for surveillance infrastructures that transmit significant quantities of data, including both uncompressed and IP protocol based video. The security and function of any surveillance system is critically dependent on the integrity of the underlying network – and physical cabling repairs can impact on operations.

Digital Barriers provides intelligent fibre networking technologies that actively analyse signal quality along individual fibres, as well as monitoring the integrity of the links between sensors and the control system. This provides early warning of cable degradation, as well potential sabotage or tampering with sensors or control system connections. This provides security to surveillance operators by providing assurance of video sources and it also allows for preemptive maintenance of degraded fibre and avoidance of disruptive interventions.

Similarly, cameras remain the most common sensory input in most complex surveillance systems, making them critically important as well as a potentially weak link. There are many quoted examples of underperforming cameras, including a report from March 2010 that only around half of the 4,313 cameras in New York City's subways were operating effectively.

Digital Barriers provides surveillance solutions with built-in camera and video diagnosis, providing automatic detection of issues in configuration and orientation, as well as potential tampering or sabotage. Our diagnosis algorithms can neutralise the effects of environmental effects, identitifying and alerting to: image blur, picture over/under exposure, camera view obstruction/masking/blocking, as well as camera movement off a target zone or area.

What you see below are some of the common scenarios in which our intelligent 4D video diagnostics will automatically alert to potential issues - with visual examples of the negative impact on surveilllance effectiveness that would otherwise be experienced.
