INNOVATION > TRANSPORTATIONAssuring Video Transmission for Rail SafetyRail and metro systems require surveillance solutions that are designed and engineered for reliable long-term performance in safety-critical applications. There are in excess of 4,500 recorded incidents of misuse or error involving rail level crossings each year in the UK alone. According to Network Rail safety statistics, this includes more than 400 near misses, including vehicles, pedestrians and other road users - and a number of fatalities. The COE range of surveillance equipment from Digital Barriers has been proven in the rail sector over the past 20 years. This includes video transmission solutions that are certified for level crossing monitoring in the UK, with equipment deployed to 200+ crossings. The latest certification of COE equipment for use by Network Rail in the UK rail network is the X-NET CODEC-TE, used for transmitting video over a digital network using Ethernet and IP protocol. Specific applications include level crossing surveillance and signalling applications requiring video transmission over a digital network (FTN, Ethernet LAN/WAN). Our assured networking technologies are also used by organisations in defence and law enforcement, for applications such as force protection and border monitoring. The use of Ethernet across many industries for data transmission has resulted in many peripheral communications devices adopting Ethernet - and the Network Rail FTN Network is undergoing a major upgrade to enable it to carry both Ethernet data traffic and legacy SDH data traffic. The X-NET CODEC-TE family is the latest in the COE range to be aimed at the Ethernet network standard, with key features required for rail safety applications.
The below video illustrates the potential risks associated with failures of video transmission equipment in a safety-critical situation such as level crossing monitoring. In such situations, the potential for long periods with little or no movement in a scene means that video can freeze without an operator being aware. Digital Barries embeds automated alarms and visual indicators into its video encoding solutions for the rail sector, providing assurance that equipment is operational and images are live and from an identified source.
